Layne has never been afraid of trying new things. Our taxidermist neighbor has gotten behind on the bear rugs he has been doing. He has someone else sew the felt bottom and border on the rug and they have been too busy to do them. First Layne asked if it was something I would be interested in doing. I said, not only no, but...well you know. I have never had a good experience with sewing. So Layne decided he wanted to give it a try. Even though he has never sat behind a sewing machine in his life. So we took the plunge and bought a new industrial leather sewing machine.
He got his practice by sewing the different colors of felt borders together. And he did pretty well with that.
Then came time to conquer the bear. I have to give him credit. He figured it out all on his own. He did watch an instructional DVD, but until you get hands on it isn't quite the same.
It is slow going because he has to push the hair back while he is sewing the border onto the leather. Trying to push the bear around while sewing is quite a task as well. The first one he needed either Karlee or me to help him push and pull the bear around. Now he has figured it out and can pretty much do it on his own.
We found out that the ping pong table we got for Christmas has really come in handy!
Layne will be doing lots of different rugs. Here is a cougar. He will also be doing a buffalo and a wolf. They still have six more bears from last spring to do and haven't even started on last fall's bears. So this will be his new source for play money.
