Grandpa Terry's 70th Birthday

We celebrated Grandpa Terry's 70th birthday on Sunday. His actual birthday was Monday, November 8th. Everyone got together at Pinnacle in Rexburg. Layne's brother, Val, manages the building so we were able to use it. This was great because we had more room and the kids had things to do to keep themselves occupied. We didn't tell Laren that everyone would be there. He thought it was just the standard birthday party that he and Layne usually share since Layne's birthday is on November 9th. But all of his kids were there as well as all of his grandchildren except for two.

Layne and his brother Daren and sister Leisa went in on this watch for Laren. He had pointed it out in a magazine over a year ago and mentioned how nice he thought it was. I picked up on that because he is definitely one of those people that is hard to buy for. Usually we get him a book and a can of peanuts and that makes him happy. It was fun to see his eyes light up when he saw the "Staur" box. He knew exactly what it was. It is a really beautiful watch and it never has to be wound or take a battery. So pretty cool.

After the gifting we sat around the table and asked him questions about his life while Val's son, Mikal, video taped it. Everyone learned something new about Grandpa and we also wrote down a lot of what he said so we could have it for his history. Normally he isn't the kind of guy that likes to be the center of attention. But I think he really enjoyed sharing his life with his kids and grand kids.

One of the questions he was asked was what he would want if he could have anything. He said for his family to live a righteous life and to follow the gospel principals. Having just heard the same thing from my dad the night before at our Thanksgiving dinner it made me realize that as we get older our wants change from material things to the really precious things of the eternities.

It was fun to see Grandpa playing pool with Tanner. These two get along so well. Tanner loves working with him on his rocks or just visiting with him. Most every Saturday Grandpa will come and get Tanner to take the garbage up to the dump. And then of course they have to stop for breakfast. I'm glad they have such a good relationship and that my kids get to have these grandparents so close.
