The boys just got back from another hunting trip in Salmon. They only got to go for four days this year because Layne has used up all his vacation. But that was better anyway so that Tanner was only out of school for two days. Zak got to go this year since he didn't have football. And he actually got a 3x2 buck. Tanner shot at one and missed and Layne saw a buck he could have shot but it wasn't big enough to make it worth it.
Layne's brother, Daren, came home with the biggest prize again this year. He got a 6x6 elk. It was HUGE!! He and Kade went up a week before since they had more time off. He got it just before my boys got there. Luckily he shot it where they could just drive up to it because Daren broke his wrist a few days before they left to go hunting. If they had needed to drag it out like they did last year it would have been a real nightmare.
Tanner was really robbed early in the hunting season. Our neighbor, Ty, took him hunting and Tanner actually shot a huge 4x4 elk. He wounded it pretty badly and they were tracking the blood trail when they heard a bunch of shots. Ty's brother was coming from the other direction and saw a few guys shoot Tanner's elk and hurry and throw it in their Razor without even gutting it, and take off. Obviously they knew it had already been shot and they weren't going to wait around for the rightful hunter to claim it. So he was pretty bummed. After that trip Tanner decided he just had to have a new rifle. So he used his earnings from potato harvest to get a new Howa 30-06. And that helped ease the pain of losing his first buck.
Today Tanner got his driver's license and that has also helped heal any old wounds. He is walking, or should I say driving on cloud nine. He passed the driving test with flying colors and only missed three on the written test. Zak was a good big brother and took him to Rexburg for the driving test. Then when Layne got home from work they went to the Sheriff's office to get his license. He was smiling from ear to ear for the picture on his license. I think he has called everyone he knows to tell them his good news. Now for the painful part...adding him to the insurance. I hope we can afford to have two teenage boys on our policy!
