Labor Day 2011

It has been such a crazy summer that Labor Day weekend was only the second time we have gone camping this summer. We went to Sawmill with Daren and Vonell and their kids. It was an amazing weekend. The weather was perfect, no snow, no wind, no rain. I don't know how we got so lucky.

However a few unlucky things did happen. Daren & Vonell's daughter, McKenzie came. She was getting married the next weekend, but her fiancee was hunting so she came to spend some time with us. When we first arrived they already had camp set up and we were about ready to have dinner that Vonell had prepared. McKenzie had a new little white shitzhu dog, Belle, that she had rescued at a rest stop along the freeway. She had only had her for about a week. Well, of course Crash had to check this new dog out. McKenzie was holding her dog and Crash started sniffing and then before long was growling and the fur started flying. I think Crash was jealous that the little dog was getting more attention than he was. Of course we were all screaming and trying to pull Crash off and in the process Belle flew off McKenzie's lap and headed for the hills, literally. She went up into the trees and they looked for her and yelled for her for over an hour, with no luck. So we feel like total schmucks that Crash is such a bully and basically sent this dog to its doom. I choose to believe that she ran to the road and was rescued again...

The second drama happened the next morning. Daren didn't have any contact solution, so he used McKenzie's. Evidently it required a special combination solution that he didn't know about. He put one contact in and it immediately fried his eye. He took it out but it was too late. His eye was swollen and burning the whole weekend. So he wasn't able to go biking at all. We all felt terrible for him. On Sunday Layne and Clayton gave him a blessing. Clayton had just recently been ordained an Elder. So Layne anointed and Clayton gave the blessing. It was neat to see him do that for his dad.

Karlee and Mackay always have fun playing together. They found this fallen tree and were carving their initials in it with sticks and rocks.

Here is Vonell crocheting Ranell's birthday afghan. It had to be extra long because Ranell's husband, Brent, is like 6'3". Daren spent the weekend wearing his sunglasses, especially at night around the campfire because the flames would really hurt his eye. And here is the criminal, Crash, living a dog's life.

This dog just can't stay out of trouble. Who can blame him, he is after all just a dog. He is meant to chew white furry things. First it was McKenzie's dog, then it was the old comforter we had thrown over him the night before to help him stay warm...

Have I mentioned that he is spoiled rotten!! Even after shredding the comforter from the night before when it came time for bed he was whining waiting to be tucked in for the night. We literally had to go pull the sleeping bad up over his shoulders to make him happy. What have I become??

The best part of camping....

sitting around the fire.

Daren and his family maintain the cemetery in Terreton. They had to get home early on Monday to dig a grave. So we packed up with them and were home by 2 p.m. So we took advantage of the day, and made it a true "Labor Day." We cleaned the trailer out from top to bottom, inside and out. Then while we had the power washer out we cleaned all four cars inside and out.

Overall it was a very enjoyable and very productive weekend!
